A wonderful week at Lakeview Elementary

Lakeview’s GLEE Club embraces new students
Lakeview Elementary School’s GLEE Club invited 36 new students to participate in a “get to know you” game day. GLEE stands for Great Leaders Every day in Every way. GLEE Club students created two different games for their new friends: a dice game that encouraged each new student to share something about themselves, and a game in which the new student had to get an Oreo from their forehead to their mouths in one minute without using their hands. As a sendoff, each new student was also given a little goodie bag to take home. At the end, GLEE students made a tunnel for the new students to run through while they cheered them on as they headed back to class!

Planting knowledge in the minds and hearts of the Lakeview Lions
On a rainy Tuesday in September, six gardening enthusiast moms planted cabbage, radicchio, napa, lettuce, rosemary, eggplant and basil just in time for Back-to-School Night! From there, the kindergarten kids were excited to participate, and have been helping water and weed the garden. In October, our new Preppy K class planted starter plants with the help of 10 helpful parent volunteers. The Preppy K class giggled as they were introduced to composting worms. Most were delighted to be able to feel the red wigglers on their hands and arms. They learned that worm composting (also known as vermicomposting) involves the breakdown of organic wastes, and turns paper, cardboard and food waste into rich, “black gold” compost. A pound of worms should be able to process roughly 1/4 to 1/2 pound of food waste per day. Eggplant and basil will be the first produce ready to harvest. So many parents have made the garden possible through their volunteer hours and donations.

Lakeview is crazy about STEM science
Mrs. Kilbarger and Mrs. Olson’s class have been reading about the Titanic. To incorporate a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) activity related to their readings, Mrs. Kilbarger and Mrs. Olson created a science lab that required their students to build a foil boat, and see how many pennies it would take to sink it. The kids had a blast!
