Jedi Training Academy at Fairmont

The force was with students as they trained at Fairmont Elementary School’s Jedi Academy. In preparation for December’s premiere of the latest Star Wars film, PE Coach Nate Babcock led students in Jedi themed activities involving light sabers, the Jedi Code, and more.

We wanted to use the excitement for the movie to develop and cultivate functional movement skills, personal and social responsibility, and to create meaningful and enjoyable opportunities to move and play that were related to something culturally relevant,” Coach B explained.

The unit was presented in four sessions.  Step 1 introduced students to the Jedi Code which emphasizes PEACE.  Step 2 showed them some short clips from Star Wars and other videos (emphasizing footwork and other techniques needed for light saber dueling).  Step 3 led students through a progression of drills that a Jedi would do in training.  Step 4 provided the opportunity for students to choreograph a routine with light sabers that looked like it belonged in the movie.

Students really enjoyed the two-week unit and are hoping to practice their Jedi skills again.
