On February 22, Esperanza High School (EHS) hosted a Unified Sports Basketball game during lunchtime.  This inclusive competition brought together Special Olympic athletes and general education partners to train and compete together on two basketball teams — the Gold Team and the Cardinal Team.

With a crowd full of fellow Aztecs, the game kicked off with Principal Gina Aguilar throwing the ball in the air for tip-off, and the student athletes were off from there.  The game was filled with back-and-forth competition, but in the end, the teams tied with a final score of 199-199.  Great job, Aztecs!

In conjunction with the Special Olympics of Southern California, this game was made possible by Esperanza’s Unified Sports class and club on campus, as well as ASB.

The Unified Sports Tournaments aim to promote and create social inclusion between individuals with and without intellectual disabilities through sports. For more information about the Unified Sports program, visit www.sosc.org/unifiedsports.
