Rio Vista Elementary School receives the 2015 Golden Bell Award

Rio Vista Elementary School in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) has won the California School Boards Association’s (CSBA) leading educational honor, the 2015 Golden Bell Award. The school’s English Language Acquisition program was singled out for this prestigious award.

The Golden Bell Awards, now in its 36th year, promotes excellence in education by recognizing outstanding programs in school districts throughout California. This accolade reflects the depth and breadth of Rio Vista’s outstanding education offerings.

The CSBA had this to say about the school: “[Rio Vista] is leading the way with their exemplary English Language Acquisition program that has put students on the road to college and career readiness. The excitement level is pervasive throughout the school with students excitedly sharing their personal success stories at every opportunity. Teachers are excitedly sharing their data highlighting the progress students are making in English acquisition and in academics, and parents are attending school functions and meetings in ever-increasing numbers and have become active participants in school governance. The English Language Acquisition program is transforming the entire school community!”

The Golden Bell Awards serve to identify exemplary schools, as well as boost confidence in public education by focusing attention on successful programs. It enables the CSBA to express appreciation to dedicated educators who strive to provide a high-quality education that challenges all students to succeed.

“All of us at Rio Vista Elementary School are incredibly humbled and honored by the recognition our school is receiving,” said Rio Vista Principal Rafael Plascencia. “The CSBA Golden Bell Award is indicative of the love and passion our teachers at Rio Vista have for reaching every student, and empowering them through English Language Acquisition to open the doors to their success. I am extremely proud of every member of school, and thankful to our superintendent and the PYLUSD Board of Education for their strong leadership and support.”

Mr. Plascencia added: “It is fitting that we will be celebrating the Golden Bell Award on our school’s 50th anniversary!”

Rio Vista was recognized at a CSBA luncheon in San Diego on Dec. 5. This year, 292 entries in 19 categories were received. Experts from school districts and county offices of education comprised the 28 member judging panel.

“Congratulations to Principal Rafael Plascencia, Assistant Principal Jose Cabrera, the teachers, staff and students of Rio Vista on this exceptional honor,” said PYLUSD Superintendent Dr. Doug Domene. “We appreciate the dedication and commitment of this school’s supportive community — this is a wonderful accomplishment.”
