Students create new environment club to benefit Brookhaven Elementary’s campus

Eco Club at Brookhaven Elementary School.

Last Spring during the annual “Love Placentia Day,” two fifth grade students at Brookhaven Elementary, Lola Hinderlighter and Noelani Pese, asked Principal Lucas if they could continue to “love” the school campus by creating an Eco Club.

The club would allow students to serve their school community by picking up trash, pulling weeds, and beautifying the campus on a regular basis. Principal Lucas was on board, but waited to see if the girls still approached her in August, as she had asked them to. As a good leaders do, Lola and Noelani did follow up and gathered more friends, met with Principal Lucas, and the Bears’ “Eco Club” was born!

Mid-October, students began with their first clean up day during lunch recess. The students even gained the support of parent volunteer, Mrs. Hinderlighter, who donated vests for the students to wear. She will also help coordinate meetings and activities throughout the year.

The first clean up day was a huge success as the Eco Club Leaders demonstrated the school’s “Be the Example” in Brookhaven’s B.E.A.R. Necessities/PBIS traits! Great work, Bears!
