Brookhaven Bears team up to rejuvenate school garden

Brookhaven garden.

Third and sixth grade classes joined forces to bring life back to Brookhaven Elementary School’s garden. Led by 3rd grade teachers, Cheryl Torres and Lisa Dykstra, and 6th grade teachers, Karen Aleksic and Steve Nakanishi, students successfully planted a variety of flowers and succulents. Traditionally, it is the third grade classes that would plant and tend the garden. However, this year 6th grade students lent some helping hands to support their younger peers.

School gardens encourage teamwork, individual responsibility, and a commitment to success. This approach allows for an increase in interaction between students and faculty encouraging growth in interpersonal skills and cooperative skills that follow students throughout their lives.

The garden is centrally located at the heart of campus allowing students and faculty to admire the scenery as they walk by. Third grade students will continue to tend the garden for the remainder of the school year, replacing the plants and flowers seasonally.  Way to “grow”, Bears!
