Local newspaper profiles Valencia volleyball star Celeste Chen

Valencia High senior volleyball player Celeste Chen earned All-Empire League laurels this season while maintaining a 4.8 GPA.

The Orange County Register recently interviewed Valencia High School volleyball player Celeste Chen. She lettered three years for longtime coach James Thorne, and received first-team All-Empire League laurels this winter for her play at libero. “We’ll miss the things she brings on the court: her talent, her passing, her defense,” Thorne said. “But she’s such a great, hard-working kid, too. We’re losing our prime example of a student-athlete.”

A 4.8 GPA student in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, Chen’s extracurriculars include coaching, volunteering and participating in several after-school clubs. She will play volleyball next year at Carleton College in Minnesota, where she’ll pursue a degree in biology and a career as a veterinary orthopedic surgeon.
