El Dorado High School theatre program nominated for dozens of awards

El Dorado spongebob

The El Dorado High theatre department is heading into awards season, and the school has recently received some exciting nominations and recognitions.

MACY AWARDS: The Macy judges come to musicals and then vote on awards for the students in all the shows they see. They are comprised of former performers and current performers, and this year there was even an original cast member from The Spongebob musical on their panel! The MACYs don’t do nominations so the school doesn’t know don’t know what they have won yet; however, they were invited to perform at the ceremony, which is a huge honor, and Sofia Candela and Owen Switzer were called back as finalists to be the JIMMY AWARDS representative for the MACYS. The JIMMYs are a national competition where the winners get sent to New York for 10 days to take workshops and compete for scholarships.  It’s a big deal and the fact that El Dorado had 2 students make it to the finals here is huge!

JRAYS: The JRAYS are similar to the MACYS, but they send out their nominations ahead of time, so the school knows that they are finalists in a few categories. Nominations include Performer in a comedic musical, Sofia Candela, Comedian, Blake Schalliol, Music direction, Katie Villareal, Costume design, Sofia Candela, Lucy Cavalluzzi, Jayden Ford, and Amelia Taberski. The school’s entire production of Spongebob is up for Best Comedic Musical.

THE CAPPIES: The CAPPIES is a high school writing program. Student critics from other schools come to shows and nominate students for awards. It’s like the TONYs for high school theatre.  El Dorado has 12 finalists this year!
For Spongebob, this includes Lead Actress in a musical, Sofia Candela; Supporting Actor in a musical, Owen Switzer; Featured Actor in a musical, Jake Flores; Sound Design in a Musical, Jake Flores and Link Montgomery; Marketing/Publicity in a Musical, Lucy Cavalluzzi, Belle Cotter, Zach Colby, and Owen Switzer; Props in a Musical, JD Cavalluzzi, Cammie Kohlenberger, and Owen Switzer; Makeup in a Musical, Autumn Foster, Haily Roberts, Phoebe Martin, and Kaylee Wing; Set Design in a Musical, Belle Cotter, Zach Colby, and Ashley Huang.

For A Wrinkle in Time, nominations include Lead Actor in a Play, Link Montgomery; Supporting Actress in a play, Phoebe Martin; Featured Actress in a Play, Lucy Cavalluzzi; Ensemble in a Play – the ensemble; and Macy Patterson is a finalist for the sophomore critic, which means that she is one of the top 5 sophomore writers in the program.

Way to go, Golden Hawks!
