New Gaga Ball courts bring Rose Drive Elementary School students together for fun physical activity

Gaga Ball at Rose.

Gaga Ball is a hit with students at Rose Drive Elementary School! If you look across the primary and upper-grade playgrounds during recess, you might just wonder why there are long lines with enthusiastic students around an octagonal pit. Upon closer inspection, you will discover the new Gaga Ball courts recently installed at Rose Drive.

A special thank you to the Rose Drive PTA for purchasing the two Gaga Ball courts and parents who volunteered their time putting them together. PE teacher Mr. Beltran, affectionately known as Mr. B, spent time researching the game in order to teach students the rules and give them opportunities to play Gaga Ball with guidance before they were able to play it on their own during recess or lunch.

Gaga Ball is a variation of dodgeball. This fast-paced game includes 8 players and combines the skills of dodging, striking, running, and jumping, while trying to strike opponents with the ball below the knees. There is constant movement by all players to avoid being hit by the ball. Gaga Ball not only gives students another great opportunity to engage in physical activity, but it also builds social skills as well. Students can be seen practicing cooperation, communication, as well as motivating each other to succeed.

The Rose Drive students are excited to have a new game to play! It’s fun, easy, and best of all supports the team spirit we have at Rose Drive. The smiles on their faces say it all!
