Esperanza jazz band receives first place at prestigious music competition

Last weekend, 16 students in Esperanza High School’s Jazz I ensemble, directed by Mr. Bradley Davis, attended the prestigious Charles Mingus Institute High School Competition in New York City.

EHS was one of only three high schools in the nation to attend the event, and received first place for their performance!

Additionally, junior Zachary Nguyen received “Outstanding Soloist” for his performance on the alto sax, and was invited to sit in with the Mingus Big Band at the Jazz Standard.

While in NYC, the band also had the opportunity to visit classic landmarks, such as Times Square and the Village Vanguard, as well as watch professional musicians in action.

Congratulations to Aztecs Zachary Nguyen (alto sax 1), Ben Tecker (alto sax 2), Robby Newberry (tenor sax 1), Doiran Apitz (tenor sax 2), Emily Williams (baritone sax), Alison De Weese (trombone 1), Riley Mau (trombone 2), Cameron Gandara (trombone 3), Eddie Wertz (lead trumpet), Bryan Zarske (jazz trumpet), Joshua de los Reyes (trumpet 3), Alex Foti (trumpet 4), Kyle Hallerbach (bass), Alyssa Laporte (piano), John Seitz (guitar) and Travis Hunter (drums)!
