Travis Ranch student Declan Riley wins prestigious writing awards

Declan Riley, an eighth grader at Travis Ranch School, recently earned a National Medal in the 2016 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for his “Humor” submission titled, “Happy Birthday?”

Nearly 320,000 works of art and writing were submitted by secondary students this year. Receiving a National Medal places Declan within the top one percent of all submissions!

The awards are sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers and Scholastic, Inc. Past winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Robert Redford, Lena Dunham and Ken Burns.

Declan also won three regional awards: two Gold Keys for both a dramatic script and the aforementioned story, “Happy Birthday?”, and a Silver Key for a piece of flash fiction.

Declan will be traveling to Carnegie Hall in New York City on Thursday, June 2, to accept his gold medal award.
