Valencia’s Academic Decathlon Team competes at state, earns several individual medals

Congratulations to the Valencia High School Academic Decathlon Team. After taking second place overall in the county competition and first place in Super Quiz, the team represented Orange County in the state competition in Sacramento from March 17 to March 20.

The team finished 17th in the state (69 teams competed) with 50,853 points!

Valencia was also the second highest-ranking team from Orange County. Our decathletes earned the following 12 individual medals:

Joyce Chew:

  • Gold Medal in Math (perfect score of 1,000!)
  • Bronze Medal in Economics

Jordan Ehrman:

  • Bronze Medal in Music

Linda Feregrino:

  • Gold Medal in Interview (perfect score of 1,000!)

Jacob Leiken:

  • Bronze Medal in Science
  • Bronze Medal in Social Science

Andrew Nguyen:

  • Gold Medal in Interview
  • Gold Medal in Speech
  • Silver Medal in Art
  • Silver Medal in Science
  • Bronze Medal in Economics

More importantly, Andrew became the first person in the history of Valencia High School to place overall in Division 1 earning a Silver Medal in the Honors Category.

The Academic Decathlon Team members are Sienna Chen, Joyce Chew, Jordan Ehrman, Linda Feregrino, Jacob Leiken, Andrew Nguyen, Tiffanie Nguyen and Rojan Rijal. The team is coached by Danielle Connor, Mindi Foote, Fred Jenkins, Kay Kerby and Sam Myovich.
