March has been an exciting time for third graders at Rose Drive Elementary School, as they anticipated the arrival of some new guests. Unlike the usual visitors, these guests came complete with claws, antennae and scales. Did we mention they were red?
We are referring, of course, to the crayfish that set up home this past week in room 61 at Rose Drive. However, as daunting as their initial appearance may seem, students remained unfazed, wasting no time becoming comfortable with picking them up and handling them – following strict instructions from their teachers, of course. The trick to avoid being “pinched” by a crayfish has to do with the manner in which you hold them, steering clear from their sharp pincer claws.
Students were given several opportunities throughout the week to observe and make notes about the structure and behavior of crayfish, making this the perfect hands-on, interactive lesson.
Like all good things, however, the crayfishes’ stay will come to end on Thursday, March 25, culminating with a drawing to determine homes for each of them. Several lucky students will go home that afternoon accompanied by their new crayfish pets.
