VIDEO: Rose Drive’s garden

Rose Drive Elementary School’s garden, a project that began as a dream at the beginning of this school year year, has finally been realized. While many of us spent the Saturday before spring break relaxing and gearing up for fun, Mr. Fredstrom, along with several enthusiastic parents and fifth grade Boy Scouts, spent the day preparing soil and building the raised beds necessary for students to begin growing their own plants.

Special thanks to the following individuals who made this project possible:

Mr. Grewal, for the use of his truck and trailer to collect the lumber and soil; and Mr. Meis, for his help in preparing the ground, and supplying power tools and his construction skills to transform the raw lumber into usable planting beds (even giving up his time on the same day of his mother’s 103rd birthday celebration!)

Mr. Fredstrom also had the help of three young men: former Rose Drive student Christian Grewal, a current Rose Drive fifth graders Austin Meise and Connor Grewal. Mr. Fredstrom refers to all three as “Troopers” for all the hard work they put forth.

Finally, a hearty thank you to Orchard Supply Hardware, which donated several bags of garden soil, Orchard Supply Hardware employer Corey MacShane who volunteered his entire day to help with the project, and to Home Depot for the significant discounts on lumber.

A final thank you to Mr. Fredstrom, whose vision and tireless persistence brought this dream to fruition.

We have many willing and excited classes that are now eager to begin planting and filling the beds. What a terrific way for students to reap the rewards of their efforts while incorporating a hands-on approach to science and the life cycle of plants.
