Last weekend was the final Community Impact Project for the Yorba Linda High School Chick-fil-A Leader Academy. The new club at YLHS has made a significant impact on students, the community and their adviser.
Back in September, the club decided they wanted to host a prom for senior citizens. On Saturday morning, April 16, students arrived at Sunrise at Yorba Linda senior living community to decorate and set up the room for a 1920s speakeasy. The older adults then spent their day getting ready, including getting manicures and making headpieces. Then, that afternoon, 60 students gathered to host the event.
The YLHS jazz band provided music for the event, while volunteer students served food, drinks and good times. They even crowned a prom king and queen – a husband and wife who just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. The senior citizens and the students danced the afternoon away. There was also a photo booth with props to capture the fun.
Many guests expressed their appreciation for having the students come and host this special event. Freshman Cameron Carlson added, “I came thinking I would be making an impact on others, but left with a lasting impact on me.” It was a special day for everyone.
Thanks to Leader Academy members; David Salinas, the manager of the Yorba Linda Chick-fil-A; Shea Runge, YLHS activities director; and Bincins Garcia, YLHS band director. Finally, special thanks to Principal Dave Flynn, who has been a constant support of the Chick-fil-A Leader Academy all year. His presence at the event was special for the students and senior citizens. The students were also excited to have their picture taken in the photo booth with the principal!
