AVID students from Valencia shine at annual senior awards ceremony

Valencia High School is proud to announce that five of their AVID seniors were recognized on Wednesday, April 20, at the Orange County Department of Education’s (OCDE) AVID Senior Standout Recognition and Scholarship Presentation held at the University of California, Irvine, Barclay Theatre. These seniors were chosen out of more than 500 applicants county-wide, and received a combined total of $221,664 in scholarships over four years!

This year’s Valencia AVID Senior Standout was Jennifer Avellaneda. According to her AVID teacher, Brandon Frank, Jennifer embodies the spirit of AVID. Her individual determination manifested in incredible grades in the most rigorous courses available. She also participated in yearbook, dance and orchestra, while maintaining academic excellence and personal integrity throughout her years at Valencia. She has overcome unimaginable tragedy in her life, but through her perseverance and humility, she has come to be seen by her entire AVID family as a true standout. Jennifer is still deciding between University of California, Riverside, and the Honors Program at California State University, Fullerton, in the fall. In addition to being honored as this year’s Senior Standout, Jennifer received an AVID Kingston Technology Scholarship of $5,000, renewable each year.

Other seniors awarded with scholarships included:

  • Karen Camacho
Hope International University Scholarship: $12,000, renewable each year
  • Jennifer Gonzalez
AVID Kingston Technology Scholarship: $5,000, renewable each year

  • Ises Segura
    Angels Scholar: $4,000
  • Raul Vera

Valencia is proud of all its AVID Tigers, and wish them well as they pursue their post-secondary education in the fall!
