On Thursday, Oct. 27, Topaz Elementary School librarian Maria Lumby coordinated the school’s fourth Read for the Record assembly. Read for the Record is a global campaign sponsored by Jumpstart, a national early education organization, which was launched over a decade ago to address the educational inequities that leave too many children unprepared for kindergarten. Last week, children and adults across the nation gathered to learn, laugh and read this year’s campaign book, “The Bear Ate Your Sandwich,” by Julia Sarcone-Roach. Mrs. Lumby arranged for volunteers to come sing and read with students in an effort to break last year’s record of 2.2 million participants. Great fun was had by all!
