Choices offered to Mabel Paine students at recess and lunch

Recess and lunch can be a difficult time for some students. They may feel alone because they don’t have many friends, they may not enjoy outside activities or they may have issues with friends and need some time away.

In order to better support the needs of ALL of students at Mabel Paine Elementary School, choices are offered during recess and at lunchtime. At recess, students can choose to either take a favorite book to the library, or go to the computer lab and work on their typing skills, Spatial-Temporal (ST) Math or other activity. During lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays, they can invite a friend to a POWER Play Day where students play board games inside room 37 with the school counselor. POWER stands for Pride, Own your actions, Well prepared, Engaged and Respect.

Offering daily choices during recess and lunch continues to promote positive behavior, and boost students’ self-esteem.

“It is our choices … that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” -J.K. Rowling
