Topaz Elementary School librarian Maria Lumby has partnered with Beach Animals Reading with Kids (BARK) to bring together children, dogs and reading. BARK is designed for students who could use an extra boost with reading. A trained dog is brought to the school’s library once a week, and listens to selected second grade students read one-on-one to her. Research has shown that this non-judgmental time helps boost students’ confidence and comfort in reading. The kids at Topaz have loved this special opportunity! A big thank you to Topaz’s BARK dog, Gigi, and her handler Mrs. Christina Jennings!
