PYLUSD “Jam Nights”

Esperanza High School music teacher Brad Davis started Jam Nights five years ago, and now there are four Jam Nights each year. This event brings students from Valencia, El Dorado and Esperanza high schools together to learn and develop the art of jazz improvisation. Valencia music teacher Pete Perez and El Dorado music teacher Eric Samson are present as well. Brad brings in formative guests to provide positive feedback to the students. All musicians have the opportunity to solo, regardless of ability, which fosters a safe environment to help the kids develop this difficult skill. No recording is allowed, so nothing is posted on social media. Guest instructors on Thursday, Feb. 23, included Long Beach Polytechnic High School band director Chris Stevens; California State University, Fullerton, jazz director Chuck Tumlinson; and PYLUSD alumnus and renowned saxophonist Alex Hahn. What a terrific collaboration for the benefit of district musician students!
