Sierra Vista celebrates the freedom to read with Banned Books Week

A Sierra Vista Elementary class was "caught" reading the banned books "Hop on Pop" and "The Giving Tree" during the school's celebration of Banned Book Week.

The week of September 25 – 29, Sierra Vista Elementary School celebrated “Banned Books Week” by “getting caught reading a banned book.”  Banned Books Week was started in 1982 by the American Library Association to celebrate the freedom to read.

In conjunction with Banned Books Week, the Sierra Vista Eagles kicked off their school-wide reading program (race).  The school enjoyed a fun-filled week as students received special bookmarks and everyone had their picture taken to commemorate the week’s events.

Principal Shirley Fargo also joined in the fun of Banned Book Week at Sierra Vista Elementary School.
