Leaders have to be the first. They must learn to see similarities instead of differences, to build trust and be vulnerable, and to listen to each other\u2019s stories. Leaders must be willing to step outside of their comfort zone and say \u201cyes\u201d when others say \u201cno.\u201d<\/p>\n

These are just some of the valuable lessons that 7th and 8th grade AVID students from Bernardo Yorba, Kraemer, Travis Ranch, Tuffree, Valadez, and Yorba Linda middle schools learned during a fun-filled, high-energy workshop hosted by California Association of Directors of Activities (CADA) on March 26 and 29.<\/p>\n

AVID teachers from each middle school identified small groups of students to arrive early to the Tommy Lasorda Field House in Yorba Linda to receive training for the day\u2019s events. These AVID\u00a0superstars helped to facilitate the activities throughout the day as group leaders.<\/p>\n

The day was filled with music, dancing, and laughter, but more serious moments of reflection, as well. Students were challenged to think about their own habits of mind and behaviors on their school campus. They were forced to spend most of the day outside of their school or social group collaborating, communicating, and reflecting — all valuable skills for college and career readiness. It was empowering to watch 7th and 8th grade AVID students gain confidence throughout the day and come together as one big PYLUSD AVID Family!<\/p>\n
