Students from El Dorado, Esperanza, and Valencia high schools checked in at the Esports Arena in Santa Ana on Tuesday, May 29 to participate in the inaugural Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) Esports Tournament.<\/p>\n

Beginning in January 2018, all four PYLUSD comprehensive high schools joined the Orange County High School Esports League (OCHSEL)<\/a><\/span>, a new program dedicated to connecting students\u2019 interest in esports to sportsmanship, entrepreneurship, and STEM interests.<\/p>\n

In OCHSEL, teams throughout the county compete against each other weekly in the game League of Legends, a team-oriented strategy game set in mystical forests where competitors select avatars with unique fighting skills.\u00a0 The OCHSEL\u00a0concluded in April,\u00a0but will start again next school year.<\/p>\n

At the PYLUSD tournament, the El Dorado Golden Hawks and Valencia Tigers bold yielded\u00a0two teams — A and B — while the Esperanza Aztecs combined\u00a0their players into one.\u00a0 By following a round-robin tournament format, each school had the opportunity to\u00a0compete against one another for League of Legends supremacy and the coveted PYLUSD Esports Tournament trophy.<\/p>\n

The PYLUSD Esports Tournament was made possible by the District’s K-12 Innovation and Technology team under the direction of Director, Cary Johnson.\u00a0 A special thanks also goes out to the Esports Arena for hosting.<\/p>\n

OCHSEL is made possible by the Samueli Foundation in partnership with the Orange County Department of Education, Orange County STEM Initiative, Connected Camps, UCI Connected Learning Lab, UCI Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, UCI Esports, UCI Henry Samueli School of Engineering, and Alvarez & Marsal to promote STEM learning and workforce opportunities.
