{"id":13997,"date":"2018-10-25T12:27:36","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T19:27:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goodnews.pylusd.org\/?p=13997"},"modified":"2018-10-25T12:27:36","modified_gmt":"2018-10-25T19:27:36","slug":"valadez-middle-school-academy-hosts-rio-vista-and-melrose-to-read-for-the-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnews.pylusd.org\/?p=13997","title":{"rendered":"Valadez Middle School Academy hosts Rio Vista and Melrose to &#8220;Read for the Record&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, October 25, eighth grade students at Valadez Middle School Academy participated in the annual event, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstart.org\/event\/read-for-the-record-2018\/\">Read for the Record<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstart.org\/\">Jumpstart\u2019s<\/a> Read for the Record is a national campaign to bring millions of young children together with valued grownups in their lives to read the same book, on the same day, in communities all around the world. The campaign highlights the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child, so that all students have the opportunity to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the Valadez Eagles collaborate with first grade students from their feeder elementary schools, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.riovistaschool.org\/\">Rio Vista<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/melrose.pylusd.org\">Melrose<\/a>, in order to enjoy and celebrate reading. This year, eighth grade students paired up with their first grade buddies were eager to read the book \u201cMaybe Something Beautiful,\u201d by F. Isabel Campoy and\u200e Theresa Howell.<\/p>\n<p>After a\u00a0warm welcome from the school\u2019s Principal, Cuco Gracian, keynote speaker and Valadez&#8217;s first principal, Minerva Gandara, spoke to those in attendance. She now serves as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pylusd.org\">Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District\u2019s<\/a> Director of English Language Development and AVID.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we are part of a national movement to raise the awareness of the importance of the power of reading,\u201d she shared. \u201cIt is a great tool to empower kids to make a better world!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Gandara also\u00a0offered the students reminders about the importance of\u00a0community and making a positive difference.<\/p>\n<p>Side by side, the middle and elementary school students then began reading all at one time in the Valadez quad. Throughout the morning, big and little buddies participated in activity rotations which included two art projects, a candy guesstimate, a math worksheet, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Before the day was over, the little buddies from Rio Vista and Melrose received their own copy of the book, \u201cMaybe Something Beautiful,\u201d to take home and read again and again with their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p><a
