On Friday, March 8, students from all Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District<\/a><\/span> (PYLUSD) middle and high schools attended the 20th Annual Chapman University Holocaust Art\u00a0& Writing Contest Awards Ceremony in Orange.<\/p>\n

This year’s theme was “Purposeful Telling Through Memory to Action,” presented by Chapman\u2019s Barry and Phyllis Rodgers Center for Holocaust Education. The competition is the largest of its kind in the nation.\u00a0Over 8,000 students from 14 countries and 31 states participated this year.<\/p>\n

To participate in the contest, PYLUSD students conducted research on the Holocaust and World War II. Each student was\u00a0instructed to listen to the testimony of a Holocaust survivor or rescuer while thinking about that individual’s motivation in telling their story. Then, they were tasked with creating a piece of art or writing that retold and reflected upon the individual’s experience.<\/p>\n

Notably, PYLUSD was the only school district in the entire world to have all of its middle and high schools take part in this competition, with 13 schools total.<\/strong> This is the fourth year in a row PYLUSD has received this distinction.<\/p>\n

In addition, PYLUSD\u00a0had three finalists recognized by Chapman University.<\/strong> This includes\u00a0Yasmine Cohen from Travis Ranch\u00a0as a finalist for middle school poetry,\u00a0Ethan Lee from El Dorado\u00a0as a finalist for high school film, and Gabriela Schrader from Esperanza\u00a0as a finalist for high school art. Congratulations, students!<\/p>\n

Although each school can only submit\u00a0three student projects to Chapman for\u00a0consideration in the contest, the following\u00a0amounts of students participated at each site:<\/p>\n

Bernardo Yorba Middle School<\/span><\/strong>
\n– 200 students participated
\n– School Finalists: Mikala Enright, Jillian Marquez,\u00a0& Elaine Thio<\/p>\n

Kraemer Middle School<\/span><\/strong>
\n– 245 students participated
\n– School Finalists: Joshua Cannon, Sean Pierson,\u00a0& Doyon Kim<\/p>\n

Travis Ranch School<\/span><\/strong>
\n– 110 students participated
\n– School Finalists: Yasmine Cohen, Josephine Kim,\u00a0& Lan Wei<\/p>\n

Tuffree Middle School<\/strong><\/span>
\n– 111 students participated
\n– School Finalists: Rowen Brown, Kristina Park,\u00a0& Abigail Vaughn<\/p>\n

Valadez Middle School Academy<\/strong><\/span>
\n– 37 students participated
\n– School Finalists: Cinthia Gonzalez-Ramos, Gloria Rocha,\u00a0& Destiny Zavala<\/p>\n

Yorba Linda Middle School<\/strong><\/span>
\n– 114 students participated

El Dorado High School<\/strong><\/span>
\n– 3 students participated
\n– School Finalists: Maverick Shuck, Berwin Zhang,\u00a0& Ethan Lee<\/p>\n

Esperanza High School<\/strong><\/span>
\n– 130 students participated
