{"id":17777,"date":"2019-11-07T15:35:05","date_gmt":"2019-11-07T23:35:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/goodnews.pylusd.org\/?p=17777"},"modified":"2019-11-08T11:30:07","modified_gmt":"2019-11-08T19:30:07","slug":"students-from-valadez-melrose-and-rio-vista-schools-join-together-to-read-for-the-record","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/goodnews.pylusd.org\/?p=17777","title":{"rendered":"Valadez, Melrose, and Rio Vista schools join together to &#8220;Read for the Record&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Thursday, November 7, eighth grade students at Valadez Middle School Academy hosted first graders from Melrose and Rio Vista elementary schools to participate in the annual\u00a0worldwide\u00a0event, \u201cRead for the Record.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The goal of Jumpstart\u2019s Read for the Record is to bring millions of young children together with valued grownups in their lives to read the same book, on the same day, in communities all around the world. The campaign highlights the importance of building early literacy and language skills for every child, so that all students have the opportunity to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, the Valadez Eagles collaborate with the young students from their feeder elementary schools in order to enjoy and celebrate reading together. This year, eighth grade students paired up with their first grade buddies were excited to read the book \u201cThank You, Omu!\u201d by author Oge Mora.<\/p>\n<p>After a warm welcome from the school\u2019s counselor, Denise Plascencia, keynote speaker and LOT318 Director, Letty Gali, spoke to those in attendance. While everyone listened intently, she emphasized the importance of education, community, and service to the students.<\/p>\n<p>LOT318 is a Placentia non-profit dedicated to serving the community by empowering them to see their worth and purpose in this world. PYLUSD students and their families benefit from LOT318\u2019s commitment to their community through homework club, summer programs, food assistance, and college\/career support.<\/p>\n<p>After the keynote addresses, the middle and elementary school students sat side-by-side and began reading all at once in the quad. Throughout the morning, big and little buddies also participated in activity rotations which included art projects, games, and more.<\/p>\n<p>Before the day was over, the young students from Melrose and Rio Vista received their own copy of the book, \u201cThank You, Omu!\u201d to take home, share and read with their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p><a
