They will now continue to compete for scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Program, which began in 1955. Here they are by school:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Valencia High School<\/strong><\/span> (8)<\/p>\n<p>Adila Ahmed<br \/>\nRachel Bang<br \/>\nAndrea Chen<br \/>\nHailey Choe<br \/>\nFrank Kim<br \/>\nNathan Kim<br \/>\nStephen Min<br \/>\nJanani Prabaharan<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Yorba Linda High School<\/strong><\/span> (3)<\/p>\n<p>Adrian Lindell<br \/>\nCatherine Kang<br \/>\nElina Savalia<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>El Dorado High School<\/strong><\/span> (1)<br \/>\nColby Bladow<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Esperanza High School<\/strong><\/span> (1)<br \/>\nBrian Nguyen<\/p>\n<p>These students were among 16,000 semifinalists named in September recognizing each state\u2019s top students. To become a finalist, the semifinalist and his or her high school submitted a detailed scholarship application in which they provided information about the semifinalist\u2019s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received.<\/p>\n<p>All winners of the Merit Scholarship awards are chosen from the finalist group based on their abilities, skills and accomplishments throughout their lives without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin or religious preference.
