On March 16 students and their families gathered at Morse Elementary for AVID Family Night. The event was designed to showcase the success of the school’s AVID program, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, and encourages students and their families to focus on having a growth mindset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The evening began with a presentation by Ms. Parelli, who explained the importance of AVID and what it means to have a growth mindset. Students in grades kindergarten through sixth then took to the stage and performed their grade level\u2019s AVID chant! Fifth graders got the crowd excited with their mantra: \u201cWhen Life Gets Rough, When School Gets Tough, We Don\u2019t Quit, We\u2019ve Got Grit!\u201d The fourth graders then presented examples of a fixed mindset (\u201cI made a mistake, so I should give up\u201d), and proceeded to give ideas on ways to change it to a growth mindset (\u201cMistakes help me learn\u201d).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next, families were challenged to participate in a STEM activity; each group was given newspaper and tape, and instructed to build the Eiffel Tower. No further instruction regarding size, shape, etc. was given\u2026the only stipulation was that their tower had to have four legs and meet at a point. Throughout the activity, families were encouraged to make a plan, design the arches, and build the tower, all while having a growth mindset. The success of the STEM project was evident in the many standing towers families had erected by the end of the night. Creativity and communication were abundant, as families worked together to become successful engineers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Morse\u2019s AVID Family Night was a resounding success, as the event helped to build community spirit and pride, and showcased the positive impact of having a growth mindset!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
