These inspiring individuals have embraced the call to shape young minds, bringing with them unique perspectives and experiences that enhance their ability to connect with students and colleagues. Let\u2019s meet three of these amazing educators\u2014Tina McKean, Veronica Yanez, and Carmen Coindreau Gonzalez\u2014who have recently made the exciting leap into the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Meet Tina McKean: Transitional Kindergarten Teacher at Ruby Drive Elementary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tina McKean\u2019s journey began at Lakeview Elementary, where she worked as a noon supervisor and fell in love with being around students. Her passion for education deepened when she became a Computer Instruction Specialist at Golden and Fairmont Elementary. Though her time in that role was cut short by the pandemic, her love for teaching never wavered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After several years as the Secretary at Golden Elementary, Tina realized how much she missed being in the classroom. Encouraged by a friend, she applied for the OCDE Classified Grant program and was accepted. \u201cI was on my way,\u201d Tina recalls, as she enrolled in National University&#8217;s Master\u2019s and Multiple Subject Teaching program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, Tina is back where her heart belongs\u2014working as a TK teacher at Ruby Drive Elementary. \u201cMy experience at school sites has helped me immensely,\u201d she explains. \u201cMy knowledge of school procedures, schedules, technology, and relationships with staff and administration has eased the transition into my new role.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For other classified employees considering a career change, Tina\u2019s advice is simple: \u201cGo for it. It\u2019s never too late to pursue your passion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her classroom, Tina\u2019s focus is on fostering self-confidence and a love of learning in her students. \u201cI want to be part of their journey, helping them grow through the year. In 2019, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher, balancing full-time studies, a full-time job, and being a mother of two. \u201cIt was a journey of growth,\u201d Veronica shares, \u201cbut I learned a lot about perseverance and the importance of seeking support.\u201d She also is a recipient of the OCDE Classified Grant.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her motivation to teach stemmed from her passion for learning and sharing knowledge. \u201cTeaching felt like a natural extension of my interests and passions,\u201d she says. While she enjoyed her role as a secretary, she couldn\u2019t deny her love for education and creativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Veronica\u2019s experience as classified support staff gave her valuable insight into how schools function, helping her build strong connections with the community. Returning to the same school as a teacher has made her transition even more meaningful. \u201cThe support from staff and parents has been incredible,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For other classified staff considering a similar path, Veronica offers words of encouragement: \u201cSwitching careers can be challenging, but it\u2019s achievable. After moving to the United States, she continued teaching in Florida, but upon relocating to California, her credential wasn\u2019t valid. During this time, she directed musical theater and explored new paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When her son was diagnosed with autism at the age of two, Carmen&#8217;s focus shifted. She became an aide to better support him, and through this experience, she discovered her calling to become a special education teacher. \u201cHe became the driving force behind my decision,\u201d Carmen shares, \u201cinspiring me to seek more tools and knowledge to support him and others like him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After working as an aide for seven years, Carmen pursued another bachelor\u2019s degree to fulfill her dream of becoming a special education teacher. \u201cI was fortunate to have a great role model in Jamie Randall, a teacher who was always supportive,\u201d Carmen explains. \u201cIt\u2019s through her guidance that I realized all students are capable of learning; they just need different ways to reach their potential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For classified staff considering a similar career change, Carmen\u2019s advice is simple: \u201cGo for it!
