This year, two high school students from the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) demonstrated exceptional artistic and observational skills, securing top honors in Orange County. Valencia High School senior Bill Meng was named the Orange County Champion, while El Dorado High School freshman Seylah Bae earned the distinction of Orange County Runner-Up. As the top two finishers, both students qualified to compete at the state championships, where they further refined their craft under the guidance of a professional courtroom artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Courtroom Art Contest is a distinguished competition that offers artistically talented students the opportunity to engage with the Mock Trial Program. Participants observe their schools\u2019 Mock Trial proceedings and create detailed illustrations of courtroom scenes, emulating the role of professional courtroom sketch artists. Each Mock Trial team may submit up to two courtroom artists, with the county champion earning eligibility to compete at the state level. At the state Mock Trial Finals, student artwork is judged by professionals in the field, and participants have the opportunity to enhance their skills through workshops led by experienced courtroom artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the highly competitive state competition, Bill Meng achieved an extraordinary milestone, earning second place in the entire state of California. Judges noted that this year\u2019s competition featured the most competitive field in the 44-year history of California Mock Trial. Notably, Bill previously showcased his artistic talent by designing the district\u2019s Seal of Civic Engagement two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congratulations to both students for their outstanding achievements and their contributions to the Mock Trial program. Their success highlights the strength of PYLUSD\u2019s arts and academic programs, as well as the dedication of students who pursue excellence across disciplines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
