On Friday, May 23, Valencia High School (VHS) held its 41st Annual Memorial Day Ceremony, paying tribute to the United States military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The solemn event brought together members of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District Board of Education, local city councilmembers, district administrators, veterans, active-duty service members, community members, families, and students. The program featured heartfelt remarks from Principal Chris Herzfeld and student speakers Chandrika Bakshi, Nathan Cho, Rofiudin Asri, and Clarissa Hurtado. This year\u2019s keynote address was delivered by United States Army Veteran Mr. Joseph L. Olivier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cToday, we gather in our Memorial Garden to remember the brave men and women from our school and community who have selflessly devoted themselves to protecting our freedom,\u201d shared student speaker Clarissa Hurtado. \u201cWe remember, especially, those who have paid the ultimate price. We come here today to express our gratitude and honor their sacrifice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valencia\u2019s Symphonic Band and Choral Program performed a moving lineup of patriotic music, including \u201cOcean Ridge Rhapsody,\u201d \u201cThe Star-Spangled Banner,\u201d \u201cAmazing Grace,\u201d and \u201cArmed Forces \u2013 The Pride of America.\u201d The ceremony was made even more memorable by a special helicopter flyover courtesy of the Orange County Sheriff\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maintaining a treasured tradition, Esperanza High School\u2019s Junior Reserve Officers\u2019 Training Corps (JROTC) respectfully presented and retired the colors to open and close the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo all who have sacrificed for our freedom and our country, we remember your service today,\u201d Bakshi concluded. \u201cWe honor you and continue to reflect upon the gifts you have given to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
