On Thursday, March 19, Morse Elementary School hosted an engaging and enriching AVID Family STEM Night, bringing together students, families, and staff for an evening centered on creativity, learning, and community connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event began with students exploring the shoe industry through an examination of influential individuals who have contributed to the field through innovation, design, and entrepreneurship. Students had the opportunity to hear from two guest speakers who shared real-world perspectives and professional insights. Shawn Williams, a footwear designer with Vans, discussed the creative process behind shoe design, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, creativity, and attention to detail. Arlene Alonso of Boot Barn provided additional industry knowledge and context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the guest presentations, families participated in a hands-on STEM design challenge in which they created their own shoes. Using a variety of materials\u2014including foam, newspaper, paper bags, yarn, tape, scissors, and markers\u2014students and their families collaborated to develop innovative designs. The activity fostered creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving, with each project reflecting thoughtful application of STEM concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students also demonstrated their learning by performing grade-level AVID chants, which highlighted key AVID strategies and reinforced foundational skills such as organization, inquiry, collaboration, and critical thinking that are integrated across the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The AVID Family STEM Night exemplified Morse Elementary School\u2019s commitment to fostering meaningful educational experiences through strong partnerships with families and the broader community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
