Having retired last year’s successful endeavors, all excess planting material was removed from the planters over the summer. They have since stood idle, awaiting a new layer of nutrient-dense soil. Greenland Nursery in Brea generously donated a truckload of soil to the project. Special thanks to Mrs. Holguin for reaching out to the nursery, and to Mr. Galli for offering to collect, load and transport the soil in his truck. Rose Drive is also grateful to the help of both parents and local Boy Scouts who volunteered their time after school carrying buckets of soil from the parking lot to the planter beds. There was quite the bucket brigade going, and, in no time at all, the beds were filled with a fresh layer of earthy, fragrant potting soil.

The planters are now ready for their first offerings – seeds that students and teachers across all grades will tend to, care for and nurture, and from which they will be able to observe the plants’ life cycle. What a terrific way for students to reap the rewards of their efforts while incorporating a hands-on approach to science.
