On Friday, September 29, John O. Tynes Elementary School in Placentia celebrated its 40 year anniversary with a special morning ceremony. The campus first opened in 1977.<\/p>\n

To kick off the festivities, first grade students led the group in a singing of, \u201cThis Land is Your Land.\u201d Principal Debra Silverman then welcomed those in attendance including honored guests, students, staff, and members of the community. Honored guests included Superintendent, Dr. Greg Plutko, Deputy Superintendent, Candy Plahy, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, Kevin Lee, former Tynes principal, Beth Berndt, and Tynes Assistant Princpal, Jacque Bluemel.<\/p>\n

Principal Silverman and Assistant Principal Bluemel entertained the audience with stories about the school\u2019s history and accomplishments, which included a summary of the man the school was named after, John O. Tynes. Known as \u201cMr. Placentia,\u201d Tynes began his many years of service to Placentia in 1944 as a teacher, coach, physical education coordinator, school district superintendent, city councilman, and mayor. During his service to the school district, Tynes, who coped with a life-long vision deficit, spearheaded the building of a new school, planned and built to accommodate children with physical handicaps who were to be integrated with all the children into all aspects of school life. From Tynes\u2019 vision, the school standing today was born.<\/p>\n

Additional highlights from the ceremony included various student performances like fifth grade students singing the \u201cTynes School Pledge,\u201d fourth grade students singing \u201cMy Country Tis of Thee,\u201d second grade students singing the \u201cTynes Song,\u201d and all students singing, \u201cHappy Birthday Tynes!\u201d To end the ceremony, Principal Silverman thanked those in attendance for contributing to 40 years of excellence at the school.<\/p>\n
