Esperanza Wrestling Showcases Competitive Excellence at the State and National Levels

Sammy Sanchez

The Esperanza High School wrestling program has emerged as one of the most competitive programs in Southern California, demonstrating both strong team performance and exceptional individual achievement. Throughout the 2025–26 season, the Aztecs have delivered impressive results in dual meets and tournaments, reflecting a sustained culture of excellence within the program. Most recently, Esperanza was ranked No. 38 nationally by Sports Illustrated, underscoring its growing prominence on the national stage.

Central to the team’s success are two standout student-athletes, Samuel “Sammy” Sanchez and Max Murillo, whose accomplishments have elevated Esperanza’s reputation both regionally and nationally.

Samuel Sanchez: Dominant Competitor at 106/120 Pounds
Samuel Sanchez has been a driving force for the Aztecs. As a freshman during the 2024–25 season, he captured the CIF California State Championship at 106 pounds, securing the title with a technical fall victory (20–0) in the final match and completing the season undefeated. This achievement marked a significant milestone for both Sanchez and the Esperanza wrestling program.

Entering the 2025–26 season, Sanchez has continued to distinguish himself at the national level. He has been featured prominently in national high school wrestling rankings near the top of his weight class, reflecting his competitive skill and success beyond the high school circuit.

Max Murillo: Consistent Leader at 113 Pounds
Junior Max Murillo has also emerged as a key contributor and leader for Esperanza. Competing at 113 pounds, Murillo earned a top-eight finish at the CIF State Wrestling Championships and recorded multiple strong performances at major tournaments throughout the season.

Murillo’s consistency, resilience, and ability to secure decisive victories—including technical falls in early rounds of high-level brackets—have made him a cornerstone of the Aztecs’ lineup. His frequent inclusion in national rankings further solidifies his status as one of the region’s standout wrestlers.

Together, Sanchez and Murillo lead Esperanza’s wrestling team with a blend of high school dominance and national-level promise. Their performances have helped elevate the Aztecs into contention at major tournaments and earned respect from opponents across California. As the season progresses, the team is one to watch for continued success on the mat.
