PYLUSD Saturday Academy invites middle school students to participate in hands-on learning

Saturday Academy in PYLUSD.

On Saturday, January 25, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) hosted an optional Saturday Academy for middle school students district-wide. That morning, over 50 students participated in exciting, hands-on educational activities at Valadez Middle School Academy in Placentia.

Students had the opportunity to build 3D structures and sculptures using a variety of materials. There were just two rules: structures had to be built on a square-shaped base and they had to balance.

According to Jason Pike, PYLUSD Teacher on Special Assignment, the students were very creative in their designs. No two structures looked the same that morning.

“It was amazing to see such great problem solving skills in action,” Pike shared.

After a break, students were encouraged to build with a new set of materials or to continue adding to their original creation. A couple of students even incorporated movement into their second creation. It was a Saturday morning well spent in PYLUSD!

In addition to being an enjoyable and educational opportunity for students, Saturday Academy also allows PYLUSD to recover Average Daily Attendance (ADA) revenues lost from student absences. Every dollar recouped through Saturday Academy will be reinvested into student success and essential programs throughout the District.
