PYLUSD Celebrates Resilience and Achievement at 2024 Summer Graduation Ceremony

On Wednesday, August 21, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) proudly hosted its 2024 Summer Graduation Ceremony at the district’s Performing Arts Center. This special event marked the fifth annual celebration, honoring nine dedicated students who, for various reasons, were unable to graduate in June but have since achieved this significant milestone.

The graduates, dressed in their caps and gowns, entered the ceremony to the traditional “Pomp and Circumstance,” their faces glowing with pride as they walked before an audience of their supportive families and friends.

Distinguished guests in attendance included Trustees Marilyn Anderson and Carrie Buck, Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss, Deputy Superintendent Dr. Issaic Gates, Assistant Superintendent Renee Gray, and Gary Stine. Also present were Executive Directors Dr. William Gray and Michael Young, along with El Camino Real High School Principal Gina Aguilar, Esperanza High School Principal Loan Sriruksa, El Dorado High School Principal Dave Okamoto, and school counselors, all there to celebrate and support their students’ achievements.

The ceremony began with a warm welcome and the Pledge of Allegiance led by Michael Young, followed by Superintendent Dr. Cherniss addressing the graduates with heartfelt praise and encouragement.

“Your perseverance and resilience have led you to this remarkable moment,” Dr. Cherniss said. “We also acknowledge the incredible support of your teachers, counselors, staff, and administrators who have been with you every step of the way. Many of you have also leaned on family members, friends, and mentors, and I encourage you to take a moment to thank those who helped you along this journey. As you step into this new chapter—whether it’s college, a career, military service, or any other exciting path ahead—we are confident you’re ready for success. The future holds endless possibilities, and we look forward to witnessing your continued growth.”

After Dr. Cherniss’ inspiring message, Michael Young officially confirmed that each student had met all the graduation requirements set by PYLUSD and the State of California. Graduates then proudly crossed the stage, shaking hands with the esteemed guests and receiving their diplomas. As they did, their principals shared personal reflections on each student’s high school journey and their aspirations for the future.

The ceremony culminated with Mr. Young officially presenting the Class of 2024. The room filled with cheers and applause as graduates celebrated their achievement, exiting the stage to reunite with their loved ones.

This year’s graduates included Melissa Campos, Kenia Herrera Garibay, Brian Martines Najera, Santiago Ordonez Mejia, Carlos Renteria, and Richard Zavala from El Camino Real; Isaiah Gonzalez and Xiang (Tommy) Li from Esperanza; and Samuel Gomez from El Dorado. Congratulations to the Class of 2024!
