Van Buren Third Graders Learn About Civic Leadership from Former Placentia Mayors

Van Buren Elementary School third-grade students engaged in a civic learning experience during a special visit from former Placentia mayors Chris Lowe and Carol Downey. The presentation introduced students to local government, including how a mayor is selected, the role of the city council, and the importance of civic leadership.

The visit was especially meaningful as Mr. Lowe is a former Van Buren student, and Ms. Downey shared her experience as Placentia’s first female mayor, a former PYLUSD teacher, and a former School Board member. Both speakers encouraged students to value education, stay curious, and listen to their teachers and families, reinforcing the importance of community involvement and lifelong learning.
