PYLUSD Board of Education recognizes Esperanza High School’s CIF championship football team

Board of Education Meeting for EHS.

On January 14, 2020, the PYLUSD Board of Education recognized Esperanza High School’s varsity football team for winning the CIF-SS Division 13 Championship back in November. Under the direction of first year head coach, Wes Choate, the team finished their season with an overall record of 10-5 and many individual accolades.

“The Aztecs battled through adversity, putting in countless hours of practice and preparation and surprising football fans throughout the county with a turn-around season that culminated with the ultimate accomplishment in high school athletics, a CIF ring,” Principal Gina Aguilar shared. “Following the CIF Championship victory, the Aztecs also competed for the first time ever in the State Regional tournament.”

The team includes one all-state nominee, one all-county player, and eight all-CIF honorees, in addition to many athletes who received all-league recognition. Running back Walter Gooding was the leading rusher in all of Orange County this past season.

“Even more impressive than these awards is the character and determination these student athletes showed on the field each week,” Aguilar noted.

Congratulations, EHS football!
