On April 10, the El Dorado High School (EDHS) varsity Winter Guard traveled to Dayton, Ohio and made their 3rd consecutive appearance at the annual Winter Guard International (WGI) World Championships held at the University of Dayton. Approximately 400 winter guards from around the nation competed in six different classes. Over the course of three days, EDHS competed against 58 other schools in the “Scholastic Open Class,” which is the 2nd highest competitive class for the high school level.
After finishing in 4th place after prelims, then 4th place after semi-finals, the Golden Hawks secured a spot in World Championships Finals for the 3rd year in a row, an accomplishment all in its own. After an exquisite finals performance, El Dorado managed to move up a spot to take 3rd place, earning the WGI Scholastic Open Class Bronze Medal! This is the first WGI medal in El Dorado’s history and the only medal won out of the 28 groups that represented the state of California.
A week after this historic trip, EDHS completed their undefeated SoCal season at the Winter Guard Association of Southern California Championships at the Bren Events Center at UC Irvine. The Hawks took home the Gold Medal by placing first in the “Scholastic Open Class.”
Now that El Dorado has earned the Bronze Medal on the national level and a Gold Medal in SoCal, they will officially be promoted to the “Scholastic World Class” where they will compete among the best winter guards from around the nation at the highest level.
“This has truly been a historic season for the El Dorado Color Guard program,” shared Eric Samson, the school’s band director. “The school is very proud of the members of the team for their commitment to the program, to the staff for educating and training the team during this season, and to the band and color guard boosters who have supported the program on this journey.”
