On Friday, May 11, Valadez Middle School Academy in Placentia celebrated its 10 year anniversary with a special after-school ceremony. The campus first opened its doors on September 2, 2008 with 462 sixth and seventh grade students. The middle school is named in honor of Gualberto J. Valadez, who taught in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) from 1939 until 1983 and inspired a countless number of young students.
To kick off the festivities, Principal James Hardin welcomed those in attendance and introduced honored guests including PYLUSD Board of Education members, Superintendent, Dr. Greg Plutko, and the Valadez family. He also entertained the audience with stories about the school’s rich history and accomplishments over the decade.
Following Principal Hardin’s introduction, those in attendance were treated to a performance by Los Hermanos Morales, a mariachi band comprised of four talented PYLUSD students — Jeannine, a sophomore at Valencia High School, Miguel, an eighth grader at Valadez, Diego, a sixth grader at Valadez, and Ashley, a a fourth grader at Rio Vista Elementary School.
The Valadez Eagles band and orchestra, under the direction of Jennifer Landaverde, also performed a series of songs to entertain guests.
Besides musical performances, the celebration also included carnival games courtesy of Eastside Christian Church, face painting, photo booth pictures, a wide variety of food selection, and much more. Old yearbooks and spirit wear were on display for current and former students, families, staff, and community members to be reminded of Valadez over the years!
