Tuffree Middle School 7th grader Luis Jasso and Principal Rose Marie Baldwin-Shirey talk about the impact of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination):
AVID is a global nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college and other postsecondary opportunities, especially those traditionally underrepresented in higher education. AVID is collecting stories from current and former students and educators to better understand the impact the program is having
In his book, “Question Everything,” education author Jay Mathews details his “Why AVID” story — one of a skeptic turned advocate. Working with Matthews, AVID is collecting stories from current and former students and educators to better understand the impact that AVID is having. Mathews writes: “Lots of journalists write about education by asking questions about why schools are so bad. I thought it might be useful to find the best schools and the best teachers, particularly teachers and schools that were helping low-income kids and minority kids, and find out why they were doing so well — what they were doing to raise these kids up to a level that no one expected. That led me to AVID.”
