Riley Mau, a senior at Esperanza High School and a member of Yorba Linda Boy Scout Troop 778, presented his Eagle Scout project to the high school staff on Monday, Jan. 11.
Riley wanted to do a project that would benefit Esperanza. Working with Assistant Principal Philip Dominguez, they determined that emergency kits were needed for all 104 classrooms. Riley raised funds by holding a garage sale with help of his friends. He purchased the requested items, and also asked local businesses for donations. Ace Hardware, Orchard Supply Hardware, Home Depot and Harbor Freight were glad to help. He and his fellow scouts then assembled the kits.
Riley has been involved with scouting since the age of six. Now that he has completed his project, he plans to finish the final steps of review and obtain his Eagle Scout rank shortly.
Riley wanted to give back to PYLUSD, as he has been involved with the music program since the fifth grade. The music education he received from the district has allowed him to play several instruments, including the baritone, trombone and drums. He is currently in Jazz I and II at Esperanza, and has recently made the Southern California Schools Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) Honor Jazz group. He will also be going to New York in February with Jazz I to compete in the Charles Mingus jazz competition.
