On Monday, October 27, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District presented its annual District Sinfonia Orchestra Concert to a full house, featuring talented musicians from all four of the district’s comprehensive high schools. Conducted by Yao Wang (Yorba Linda High School), Matt Fang (Esperanza High School), Taylor Smith (El Dorado High School), and Gary Hung (Valencia High School), the concert showcased the artistry, collaboration, and musical excellence that define PYLUSD’s orchestra programs.
Dr. Elisabeth Summers, Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) Coordinator for PYLUSD, welcomed guests and expressed her pride in the district’s thriving music community. In attendance were Superintendent Dr. Kym LeBlanc-Esparza, Board of Education members, administrators, alumni, and many proud families who came together to celebrate this beloved annual tradition.
Each orchestra performed a selection of distinguished works from the classical repertoire, representing a wide range of styles and historical eras. From the emotional lyricism of Romantic-era compositions to the precision and energy of symphonic masterworks, students demonstrated exceptional technical skill and expressive maturity.
The evening culminated in a moving combined performance of Ashokan Farewell, directed by Gary Hung, which served as a heartfelt tribute to Bruce Topping, longtime Valencia High School and Kraemer Middle School orchestra director, who passed away before the start of the school year. In his honor, Bruce’s signature black hat was placed on stage, symbolizing his enduring presence and the profound impact he had on students and colleagues alike. Audience members lit tealights during the final piece, creating a soft, glowing tribute to his lasting legacy. The district was especially honored to have Bruce’s brother, David, in attendance for this touching remembrance.
The District Sinfonia Orchestra Concert continues to serve as a highlight of the PYLUSD Visual and Performing Arts calendar, reflecting the strength of the district’s music education programs and the unwavering dedication of its teachers and students.
