Van Buren Elementary Third Graders Build Fraction Skills Through Hands-On Learning

At Van Buren Elementary School, third-grade students in Ms. Lewis’s classroom are exploring foundational mathematical concepts through engaging, hands-on instruction. As part of a lesson on fractions, students created fraction bars by folding strips of colored paper to represent different fractional parts. This interactive activity helped students visualize denominators and develop a clearer understanding of unit fractions.

By organizing their fraction strips from the largest units to the smallest, students observed an important mathematical relationship: as the denominator increases, the size of each unit fraction decreases. The lesson concluded with an interactive “Would You Rather?” discussion in which students compared fractional portions—such as choosing between ½ of a brownie or ⅛ of the same brownie—encouraging them to apply their understanding in a real-world context.

Through hands-on exploration and collaborative discussion, students strengthened their conceptual understanding of fractions while fostering curiosity and enthusiasm for mathematics.
