All About Food program a big success at district elementary schools

All About Food is a local nonprofit organization that began partnering with PYLUSD during the 2015-2016 school year at Glenview and Ruby Drive elementary schools. Six garden beds were installed by teams of volunteers. Nutrition lessons based on California State Content Standards were provided for students in first through sixth grade. Students, parents, teachers and administrators reacted very positively to all components of the partnership. Teachers and parents reported improvements in student attitudes toward eating fruits and vegetables, including increased requests for salads and vegetables in the school meal programs.

Rio Vista and Topaz elementary schools have established partnerships with All About Food for the upcoming school year. Six garden beds were installed on each campus during the summer of 2016.

All four schools will begin composting at the lunch tables. Students will learn not only about composting, but also about reducing the school district’s carbon footprint by minimizing the solid waste that ends up in the trash.
