On Saturday, Aug. 27, the Melrose Elementary School community in Placentia hosted a car wash to support and raise money for the Ledezma family.
The previous weekend, Stephanie and Dayana Ledezma – students at Melrose – and their mother were tragically killed by a drunk driver while crossing the street on their way home from a birthday party. They are survived by two older sisters – a fifth grader at Melrose and a junior at Valencia High School.
Volunteers from Melrose, the La Jolla community, the El Dorado High School Key Club and the district office, as well as family members and staff from other schools, washed hundreds of cars throughout the day. Collectively, nearly $10,000 was raised for the family, which will be used for funeral expenses. All funds were collected by the R.E.A.C.H. Foundation, and distributed to the family. The Kiwanis Club of Placentia and Craftsman Wood Fired Pizza provided food for the event, with proceeds going to the family.
“What an amazing show of community support for the Ledezma family,” commented Jon Matson, PYLUSD’s McKinney-Vento liaison. “We’d like to thank everyone who participated. It was truly a community effort, and we will continue to support our families in need.”
