On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the Esperanza High School Medical Sciences Academy took 41 students on a Vital Link-sponsored field trip to Saddleback Memorial Medical Center. There were approximately 300 students in attendance to explore different healthcare fields. The students watched surgeons, nurses and doctors perform a roleplaying exercise in which a patient was having an appendectomy (removal of appendix) performed. Students actually watched a video of a real procedure that had been performed, with spotters available for anyone who couldn’t stomach the material. Afterward, there was a Q&A with a panel of medical professionals, as well as interactive displays and one-on-one conversations with the staff. It was a wonderful, hands-on experience for everyone involved.
