First off, the Board of Education presented the High School Activities Directors with the “You Are the Advantage” Award for their recent collaboration in planning the first ever District Winter Formal in January. The “You Are The Advantage” Award recognizes community members, organizations, and employees who embody the District’s four core values – Excellence, Collaboration, Integrity, and Innovation.

“This districtwide dance was a first for PYLUSD and Orange County,” Director of High School Education, Cary Johnson, shared that evening. “The event is a manifestation of these five individuals living the PYLUSD core values of excellence, collaboration, integrity, and innovation and why this evening they are being recognized with The Advantage Award.”

The dance united nearly 2,500 students for an evening of fun from all seven of the District’s high schools — El Camino Real, El Dorado, Esperanza, La Entrada, Parkview, Valencia, and Yorba Linda. The activities directors recognized are (left to right) Jennifer DiCarlo from El Camino Real, Shea Runge from Yorba Linda, Eron Campuzano from El Dorado, Lauren Stouffer from Valencia, and Meghann Lukach from Esperanza.

Next up, the Board recognized the District’s Student Services and Health Services Departments, as well as various community partners for their recent work transforming the lives of one PYLUSD family for the better. Earlier this school year, prior to the Christmas break, Student Services staff became aware a family who was struggling with school attendance. Approximately a year ago, the family had lost their father and the children’s mother was left with the responsibility of raising their four children on her own. When Student Services went to visit the family to address the attendance, they found an apartment that was in complete disrepair due to neglect and water damage. Along with the District’s Health Services team and generous community partners, the team got to work.

Richard McAlindin, Executive Director of Instructional Support, shared the following during the recognition that evening: “The team you see here, quickly assembled to determine what they could do to help this family in need. They started by approaching the landlord who gave them permission to start some repair of the apartment. Through the collaborative effort of this team, the family received a two week stay at a hotel with meals while the work could be completed, new wardrobes and bedroom furniture and bedding for all family members, new kitchen equipment for cooking, new kitchen appliances, a complete cleaning and disinfecting of the apartment, repairs to existing plumbing, new cabinetry and counter tops throughout as well as storage for their clothes and belongings, new flooring throughout, new energy efficient windows installed, past due utility bills paid up to date, and rent for two months.”

Trustees thanked the individuals for their commitment to the PYLUSD school community and for living out the District’s core values.

Lastly, Trustees recognized the District’s Print Shop personnel (pictured above) for their continued commitment to excellent customer service and innovation. The recognition that evening included supervisor, Robert Arauz, technician, Greg Ribeiro, clerk, Andrea Ayala, and operator, David Rodriguez.

“Banners, high volume copying, desktop publishing, posters, photo enlargements, canvas printing, color copies, mail merge, binding, special papers, yearbooks, laser engraving, large format printing and installations … you name it, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District Print Shop will make it happen,” Dr. Greg Plutko, Superintendent, said. “Their department truly embraces a culture that celebrates and inspires intellectual exploration in benefit of PYLUSD and the community partners they so diligently serve.”

Congrats to all!
