Tynes students experiment with weather with college professors

Sixth grade students at Tynes Elementary School were fortunate to be taught two science lessons from a current science professor from Santiago Canyon College, Mrs. Vanessa Engstrom, and professor emeritus from California State University, Fullerton, Dr. Wayne Engstrom.

In the first experiment, students collected humidity data using sling psychrometers, and discussed how surface types affect humidity levels. In the second experiment, students learned about dependent and independent variables, while exploring the relationship between surface color and temperature. After hypothesizing about the absorption rate of light and dark materials, students measured the increase in temperature at timed intervals. At the conclusion of the experiment, students graphed and documented the results of their findings.

Tynes sixth graders are really starting to think like scientists!
